WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY

What is Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a way of helping you create a state of pure mental focus, sometimes called a “hypnotic trance”. Someone in a trance might look like they are asleep, but actually, they’re completely focused on what is happening in their unconscious mind.

When you’re in a state of hypnosis, the hypnotist or hypnotherapist can help you change or remove any unwanted thoughts, feelings or behaviours, or help you create new, positive ways of thinking and feeling.

How does hypnosis work?

Most people have heard of the conscious and unconscious mind.
The conscious mind is where you spend most of your life, making decisions using information received from your unconscious mind, which is based on your past feelings, memories and experiences as well as your beliefs and fears about the present and the future.

This is why you can understand, logically, that a particular thought or feeling is “silly”, “daft” or “illogical”, but you can’t seem to control it….because the thoughts and feelings are actually in your unconscious mind.

When you’re in a hypnotic trance, I can communicate directly with your unconscious mind to help resolve the thoughts, feelings and problems so that it’s no longer a problem. Unlike many other “talking therapies’, using hypnosis means that it’s not necessary for you to discuss the issues that have caused the problems. So you don’t need to tell me what’s happened to you in order to be able to resolve the problem.

What does hypnosis feel like?

The physical sensation of being in hypnosis can vary from person to person.
Some people feel tingling, some people feel heavy, some people feel lighter. There is no wrong way to feel hypnosis, and many clients report feeling “lighter”, “freer” or “like a weight has been lifted” by the end of a session. You’ll remember what has happened, although it will often feel like time has gone “faster” or “slower” than normal.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No, you can’t get stuck in hypnosis. It’s not possible to hypnotise someone who does not want to be hypnotised, and simply deciding that you don’t want to be in a trance any more is enough to make the trance finish.

Can I be made to say or do things that I don’t want to do?

No, whilst you’re in hypnosis, you can’t be made to say or do things that you don’t want to do.
Not only would this be unethical, and cause you to leave me a bad review, your conscious, logical mind would simply “wake up” and stop you doing or saying whatever it is you don’t want to do.

What techniques will you use to help me?

I treat every client as an individual – so until we’re working together, I don’t know the best way to help you.

Techniques we might use together include:

Anchoring involves helping you remember a time when you had emotions that you’d like more of. Together, we’ll work to make that memory seem more and more vivid, before helping you link those feelings to a sensation of pressure (normally on the back of the hand or the earlobe). By “anchoring” those positive feelings to a physical feeling, you can re-experience the feeling simply by applying the physical pressure.

IEMT (Integrated Eye Movement Therapy) which helps change the the way we feel about ourselves and our feelings using a combination of eye movements and specific questions relating to memory, feelings and identity. It is not the same as EMDR.

Parts therapy which is a way of reconciling internal conflict, where the “part” of you that wants to do something, and the “part” of you that doesn’t.

Mind-scaping is a technique that is perfect for helping you visualise a problem and a route through it in a safe and meaningful way, by imagining your life as a map, and finding a way from your current “position” to your “destination”, removing any obstacles that might be in the way in a safe and congruent way.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT – also known as Tapping) is a powerful self-help technique that involves concentrating on thoughts, repeating positive affirmations and tapping on areas of the body. There are different theories about how and why tapping works, and where appropriate, I’ll teach you how you can use tapping to create positive feelings of calm, safety and assurance whenever you need it.

Kinetic Shift is a combination of different techniques used in a particular sequence that can help you let go of negative images, thoughts or feelings. Once those are gone, we can work to “install” helpful, positive feelings, emotions and belief allowing you to move forward into a brighter future.

Timeline Therapy which involves going back to incidents in the past and viewing them from a disassociated (third party) position. By re-evaluating events in your past, you may find that your beliefs about those events change, and in turn change how you feel about events in the future.

How hypnosis can help you.

My name’s Vic and I’m a hypnotist.

Or a hypnotherapist, if you want to get all formal about it.
I’m not a counsellor or a psychotherapist or a psychologist.
I can’t prescribe you medication for your problems.
I’m not going to ask you to lie on a couch and tell me about your relationship with your mother.
Or make you relive the worst experiences of your life over and over.
Because if talking endlessly about your problems had worked, you wouldn’t be still looking for help, would you?
I’m a hypnotist.
As a hypnotist, I use hypnosis to talk directly to your unconscious mind.
With hypnosis, we can journey into your powerful, wise, unconscious mind to sort out the shit that’s been holding you back.
So that you can live the life you want.
Free of the issues that have been holding you back.

Ready to change your life?

I offer a free twenty minute consultation so you can see how hypnosis is different – and how it can help you get your life back on track.
